FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Common Questions on PM Surya Ghar Scheme

What are DCR (Domestic Content Requirement) solar panels and why are they mandatory? ▼

Under MNRE guidelines for PM Surya Ghar, to qualify for the central subsidy, both the solar photovoltaic cells and the solar modules must be manufactured domestically in India (known as Domestic Content Requirement or DCR). If you install imported Chinese non-DCR panels, you will not receive any government subsidy. Vetted brands offering DCR panels include Tata Power Solar, Waaree, Vikram Solar, Loom Solar, and Adani Solar.

How does Net Metering work with on-grid rooftop solar? ▼

A bidirectional net meter records both electricity consumed from the DISCOM grid (Import) and excess solar power sent into the grid (Export). During daytime peak sunshine hours, your solar panels power your appliances directly. Any excess electricity is exported to the grid. At night, you draw power from the grid. At the end of the billing cycle, your DISCOM bills you only for the Net Units (Import minus Export). If export exceeds import, energy credits roll over to the next month! Model your monthly unit bank and March 31 cash settlement with our Solar Net Metering & Banking Calculator.

What happens during power cuts or on monsoon cloudy days? ▼

Standard on-grid solar systems feature an automatic anti-islanding safety shutdown during grid power outages to prevent electrocuting linemen working on local power lines. If you experience frequent power cuts, you can install a Hybrid Solar System with an inverter and lithium battery backup (LiFePO4) which continues providing backup electricity to your home even during blackouts. On rainy/cloudy days, modern mono-PERC panels still generate 20% to 35% of their rated output from diffused daylight.

Can Group Housing Societies and RWAs claim subsidies? ▼

Yes! Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs) and Group Housing Societies (GHS) can claim a subsidy of ₹18,000 per kW for common facility systems up to 500 kW capacity. This powers common lighting, water booster pumps, elevators, and society electric vehicle (EV) charging stations.
