The "5th of the Month" Rule: Maximize PPF Returns
Public Provident Fund interest is compounded annually on March 31st, but it is calculated on a monthly basis based on the minimum balance between the 5th day and the last day of each month.
💡 Crucial Tip for Maximum Returns:
- Annual Lump-Sum Investors: Deposit your full ₹1,50,000 on or before April 5th. You will earn compound interest on the entire amount for all 12 months of the financial year!
- Monthly SIP Investors: Transfer your monthly installment on or before the 5th of every month. If you deposit on the 6th, that deposit earns zero interest for that entire month.

Frequently Asked Questions
What happens if I don't deposit the minimum ₹500 in a year? ▼
If you fail to deposit the minimum mandatory ₹500 in any financial year, your PPF account becomes inactive or discontinued. You can revive it at your bank or post office by paying a nominal penalty fee of ₹50 per defaulted year plus the minimum deposit of ₹500 for each year missed.
Can I withdraw money before 15 years? ▼
Yes. Partial withdrawals are permitted starting from the 7th financial year onwards (up to 50% of the balance at the end of the 4th preceding year or 1st preceding year, whichever is lower). Additionally, a low-interest loan facility is available against your PPF balance between the 3rd and 6th financial year.
Can NRIs open a new PPF account? ▼
Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) cannot open a new PPF account. However, if a resident Indian opened a PPF account and subsequently became an NRI, they can continue maintaining the account until its original 15-year maturity on a non-repatriable basis (extensions are not permitted for NRIs).
